Tens of thousands of households in ‘group buying’ energy move

The consumer group, Which? is collecting signatures from people who are fed up with high energy bills, which average £1,260 a year. Which? will then invite the UK’s energy suppliers to take part in a so-called “reverse auction”, in which participants try to outbid each other with lower prices. The supplier that commits to the lowest energy price will win the petition’s signatories as customers.

The campaign, which is called The Big Switch, is that the more people sign up to the list, the lower the prices will be. The campaign, which was welcomed by ministers, works along the same principles of group buying sites such as Groupon.

Small business user guide for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has produced guidance which explains how organisations can measure and report their green house gas (GHG) emissions, as well as set targets to reduce them. The Hertfordshire Local Broadband Plan

The Hertfordshire Local Broadband Plan plans for a much better broadband infrastructure. There will be a few places which are ‘hard to reach’ and where it is not considered viable to install this infrastructure through mainstream plans. For these areas, the government has launched a fund so that communities can prepare their own plans to install superfast broadband: the Rural Communities Broadband Fund (RCBF). The next round for expressing an interest in the RCBF is expected to open in April 2012. It is not currently clear whether there will be further rounds.

Training in low-carbon community-led planning – March and May 2012

The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is running six workshops to explore how communities can plan low-carbon and renewable energy initiatives, such as wind farms or solar projects. The workshops are aimed at community groups themselves, as well as the staff of organisations like local authorities, national parks and third sector organisations who work with communities on local planning or sustainable living initiatives. Changes to the law regarding Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) licences

Community building managing committees are reminded to make changes to their hire agreement now that the law regarding PPL has come into force. All hirers (except commercial) should ensure that the building is covered by both a Performing Rights Society (PRS) licence and a Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) licence in the event that they wish to play music.
